The world, the past two months, has been devastated with numerous natural disasters. Everything from Caribbean hurricanes to Californian Wildfires to the floods in India. Although it feels as if only recently there has been an increase in natural disasters, this problem has been happening for years.
Every year natural disasters hit countries around the world, and they are getting worse and worse. This year alone the Unites States was hit with 3 major hurricanes: Irma, Harvey, and Maria.
Climate change did not create these storms, but it did make these storms worse. With warmer temperatures and rising sea levels a hurricane will have heavier rains, and more catastrophic floods, as was the case in Houston. Hurricane Harvey, a category 3 storm, dropped almost 50 inches of rain on the Texas city, the most rain to ever fall on the continental United States due to a storm.
Hurricane Irma also broke records as the longest powerful hurricane ever in history. It lasted 12 days as a tropical storm, 3 of those days as a category 5 hurricane, and sustained 185 mph winds for 37 hours.
Despite the glaring evidence of climate change, and the effects in has on American citizens, no progress has been made by the Unites States government to help decrease climate change. The Trump administration has done the opposite. Since Trump was elected, the United States has backed out of the Paris climate accord, and several bills passed by President Obama to prevent climate change from increasing have been repealed.
Climate change is not something that can be ignored. It is literally killing people, and our government is doing nothing to stop it. If nothing is done to try and stop climate change, this could be only the beginning of many years of record breaking storms.
